Xin Zhang explores the space between attachment and restraint, asking how intimacy can both hold us and bind us. Through painting, rope and installation, she traces the boundaries between self and other, vulnerability and agency, desire and control. In her work, rope is not simply a means of restriction, but a a way of making visible the attachments that shape, protect and sometimes confine us.
Syona Cheng’s INTERFACE explores how individuals are seen, understood and defined within contemporary society. Beginning with the conditions through which people are evaluated in marriage markets—such as age, occupation and income—the works use red threads, transparent masks and encounters between figures to consider how we continually translate ourselves into identities that can be read and judged within intimate relationships, social systems and digital environments. The title INTERFACE refers to the structures through which we encounter one another: identity, labels and social conventions make us visible, while simultaneously shaping what can and cannot be seen.
